I wrote the fellow to ask if he made the platform from scratch, or whether it was some salvaged part. Here’s what he had to say:

“I’m glad you liked the videos. I made the red metal apparatus in the metal shop at my art school. It consists of a threaded steel rod and associated nut, steel dowel, angle iron, skateboard bearings, etc.”

My immediate thought was how much data I might be able to squeeze onto an acetate sheet in the form of sound. (Likely answer: not very much.)
